Canadian Discharge Depot Buxton Derbyshire
Hello If there is any patient researchers out there could you tell me where the Canadian Discharge Depot
was in Buxton? Having Just traced one of my ancestors from Macclesfield who enlisted with the Canadian Army I have Just
recieved an image of the Nominal Roll Dispersal Draft dated 13.8.1919 in which it states proceeding from Buxton Derbyshire.

Re: Canadian Discharge Depot Buxton Derbyshire
Hello Pauline,
I had never heard of the Canadian discharge depot. However I have discovered that it was the whole of Buxton that was used to receive Canadian soldiers. Among the Hotels used to greet them were: the Empire Hotel which stood in the parks off Manchester road ; The Palace Hotel which was known as "Granville Canadian Special Hospital", plus the Buxton Hydro formely on Broadwalk.
Best regards,
Richard

Hello Richard,
Many thanks for that info. I never knew that the Palace Hotel used to be
an hospital for Canadian Soldiers. I guess we learn something new everyday. I used to work at the Palace Hotel in my younger days, I doubt whether I could walk up that hill now LOL. It's surprising what transpires from doing family history.
Regards

Hello Pauline,
You might try the Canadian War Diaries which are online at which covers the period during which the Canadians were in Buxton during the first world war. I believe there may be a hard copy at the local studies for Derbyshire at Matlock. There is a day by day account of events which makes interesting reading.
There is a short chapter in my book on the Buxton Hydro relating to its occupation by the Granville Canadian Special Hospital.
Regards,
Peter
